Default Web Site of IIS 8

During the installation of Internet Information Services (IIS) with default options on Windows 8.1, a default web site is also created in the %SystemDrive%\Inetpub\wwwroot directory on the Web server.

The Inetsrv Directory

The Internet Information Services (IIS) of Windows 8.1 is installed in the %SystemDrive%\Windows\System32\inetsrv directory

The default contents of inetsrv directory are

• %windir%\system32\inetsrv: Installation Files
• %windir%\system32\inetsrv\config: IIS Configuration & Schema

The Inetpub Directory

The root location of internet web site is installed in the %SystemDrive%\Inetpub. A default web site is also created in the default web site directory, %SystemDrive%\Inetpub\wwwroot.

The default contents of inetpub directory are

• %systemdrive%\inetpub\custerr: IIS Error Pages
• %systemdrive%\inetpub\history: History of Config Files
• %systemdrive%\inetpub\logs: IIS Logs (W3SVC, FTP & FREB Logs)
• %SystemDrive%\inetpub\temp: Temporary IIS Files
• %systemdrive%\inetpub\temp\appPools: Temporary IIS & Application Pool Configuration
• %SystemDrive%\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files: Temporary IIS Compressed Files
• %systemdrive%\inetpub\wwwroot: Default Website

Contents of Default Web Site

The default web site contains only two files:

• iis-85.png
• iisstart.html

The Default Web Site in IIS Manager

The default web site can also be managed in IIS Manager.

1. "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager" with features view is opened for managing the default web site in Internet Inforamtion Services on Windows 8.1.
2. "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager" with content view is opened for managing the default web site in Internet Inforamtion Services on Windows 8.1.
